The Society currently has over 260 ordinary members in the UK and overseas. Membership is open to all, including professionals, citizens, patients, and users of healthcare and health information, who share the Society's concerns and objectives. Current 2004/2005 annual membership subscription rates are:

  • £30 for student membership
  • £55 for individual membership (£50 by standing order)
  • £75 for institutional membership
  • £30 for retired persons (individual membership)

The Society also offers Fellowship of the Society (FBMIS) to applicants with the required educational and practical experience.

Payment may be made by cheque or money-order. Alternatively, we are happy to accept payments by standing order from all classes of member, although the reduced rate applies only to individual membership.

Activities and services to members:

  • Biomedical Informatics Today, a newsletter on current issues in health informatics, with book and software reviews and news of forthcoming events.
  • Organising and sponsoring a range of open workshops, conferences and other meetings addressing both introductory and research areas for various audiences.
  • Gathering and delivering advice and comment on health information policies.
  • A website (http://www.bmis.org/) with information about the Society, conference details and other useful digital resources.  
  • A listserver (eGroups - with searchable archive) open to all members.
  • Free subscription to the Health Informatics Journal and significantly reduced subscription to the Journal of Medical Informatics & The Internet in Medicine. Further details on request.
  • The Society has been approved by the Board of Inland Revenue under Section 201 Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988, with effect from 6 April 1999. This means that subscription is now tax deductible (seek advice from the treasurer).

Applications for Membership

To apply for membership, you can fill out a membership application form, complete the details, and submit it online. If you'd prefer, you can use our secure server. Alternatively, there is a text only form to print out and send through the post to the address given on the form. Further membership enquiries, or requests for copies of the form, can be made in writing to the membership secretary, Kelly Goulding, at the address on the application form, or by e-mail to k.goulding@rbh.nthames.nhs.uk .

Overseas applications

BMiS welcomes membership applications from overseas, but please note that we can only accept cheques or money-orders if they are payable directly in pounds sterling.
